Mute someone on Instagram
Learn how to mute someone's Instagram posts or stories without unfollowing or blocking them.
Go to the person's Instagram profile > tap Following > Mute > turn on Posts, Stories, or both.
Before you start
- Muting is different from unfollowing or blocking. You still follow the person, but Instagram hides selected content from your feed.
- The person is not notified when you mute or unmute them.
- You can usually mute posts, stories, or both.
- Muting only changes what you see. It does not stop the person from seeing your profile or interacting with you.
Steps on mobile
- Open Instagram and go to the profile of the person you want to mute.
- Tap Following.
- Tap Mute.
- Turn on Posts if you do not want their posts in your feed.
- Turn on Stories if you do not want their stories at the top of Instagram.
- Leave either option off if you only want to mute one type of content.
Desktop/web availability
Instagram's full mute controls may be limited on desktop. If you do not see a mute option on the person's profile in a browser, use the Instagram mobile app.
Common problems
I still see the person in my follower or following list.
That is expected. Muting does not unfollow, remove, or block the person.
I muted posts but still see stories.
Posts and stories can be muted separately. Go back to Following > Mute and turn on Stories too.
I want to see their content again.
Go back to their profile, tap Following > Mute, then turn off the mute options you no longer want.
FAQ
Will someone know if I mute them on Instagram?
No. Instagram does not notify people when you mute or unmute them.
Is muting the same as blocking?
No. Blocking limits the person's ability to find or interact with your account. Muting only hides their posts or stories from your view.
Can I mute only stories?
Yes. Use the Stories mute option and leave Posts off if you only want to hide their stories.
