Block someone on Instagram

Before you start

• Blocking someone will prevent them from seeing your posts and stories and from contacting you.
• People you block are not notified that you blocked them.
• Blocking affects the account you block and any new accounts they create, but not existing other accounts you follow.
• If you are in a group chat with a blocked person, you can choose to stay or leave the group, but messages will still be visible to both.

Steps on mobile

1. Open Instagram and go to Messages.
2. Select the chat with the person you want to block.
3. Tap Information at the top of the chat.
4. Tap Block and then tap Block again to confirm.
5. Alternatively, search for the person’s username and go to their profile.
6. Tap Options (three dots or menu) on their profile.
7. Tap Block and confirm to block the account.

Steps on desktop

1. Click Messages on the left side of Instagram.
2. Click the chat with the person you want to block.
3. Click Information at the top of the chat.
4. Click Block/Unblock, then click again to confirm.
5. Or, click the person’s username from a post or story to go to their profile.
6. Click Options in the top right of their profile.
7. Click Block and confirm your choice.

Common problems

I blocked someone but they can still see my posts from another account.

Blocking applies to the account you blocked and new accounts they create, but not to other existing accounts you follow. You need to block those accounts separately.

I’m in a group chat with someone I blocked and I still see their messages.

If you choose to stay in the group chat after blocking, you and the blocked person can still see each other’s messages in that group.

I want to block someone but don’t want to block all their accounts.
